Bankruptcy Filings Continue to Tumble

As has been the trend nationwide, statistics from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wisconsin shows that bankruptcy filings have decreased to 16,835 for the year 2017 after reaching its peak of more than 30,000 filings in 2010.


The United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida which includes Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Orlando, Ocala, Daytona and Fort Myers, is the third busiest bankruptcy court out of a total of ninety districts. Ten million people fall within the Middle District and it is responsible for thirty-five out of Florida’s sixty-seven counties.

In Jacksonville in 2016, there were 5,728 bankruptcies filed versus 8,977 in Miami (Southern District of Florida). In 2017, Jacksonville had 4,849 versus 8,324 for Miami. This year through January, 363 bankruptcies have been filed in Jacksonville versus 659 in Miami.
