The mourners were gathered close, trying to fit underneath the makeshift canopy. The rain was relentless and the dark skies only added to the somber mood. Anny sat front and center with Jake in her arms. The words of solace offered by the young priest did anything but provide her comfort. She wondered how many times a day he spoke the same words.

“We equate death with sadness, but don’t. He would never want to return to earth and see his friends, family, and loved ones suffering. He would want to see us happy. His body is only a shell for his spirit, and his spirit will continue to live inside us. Today his body joins his spirit in heaven. Today he meets all of his loved ones that have passed before him. Today he stops suffering. Today is the first day of his eternal life. While he no longer lives on what we know as earth, his soul continues to live in eternity in God’s heaven as one of his angels. He is gone, but that doesn’t mean he has to be forgotten. He is always there with you, guiding you each step of the way. He is always listening. Don’t be afraid to talk to him.”
The sound of raindrops on the vinyl tarp hypnotized her. The priest’s words were drowned out as her mind became distracted with thousands of thoughts and memories.
As the casket was lowered into the ground, she closed her eyes. No one could fault her and no one would notice anyway because of the dark tint of the oversize sunglasses she wore. A few family members walked up to the coffin to pay their last respects. Some dropped roses on top of the casket while some whispered a final thought.
