This week during the filming of Deadpool 2 in Vancouver, Canada, a fatal motorcycle accident occurred resulting in the death of stunt woman, Joi SJ Harris.
According to reports, Joi SJ Harris had rehearsed the stunt multiple times, four to five times earlier without a hitch. The stunt required Harris to ride her Ducati motorcycle down two sets of ramps and across stairs. While jumping a curb, it seems Harris lost control and was ejected from her motorcycle, crashing through the plate-glass window of Shaw Tower which was located across the street from the movie set.
Harris was not wearing a helmet for the motorcycle stunt as Domino, the character she was portraying, doesn’t wear one. Domino is played by actress Zazie Beetz. Harris was treated on scene, but unfortunately died shortly thereafter.
Harris was known as the first licensed African-American female road racer and it is for that reason that I categorized this blog under the “bad assery” section. This was her first film as a stunt performer.
A couple of weeks ago another female stunt rider, Olga Pronina, Instagram and YouTube sensation, also died in a motorcycle accident performing stunts. However, Olga Pronina was not a professional stunt person.
Deadpool lead actor-Ryan Reynolds, posted on Twitter the following:
“Today, we tragically lost a member of our crew while filming ‘Deadpool. We’re heartbroken, shocked and devastated … but recognize nothing can come close to the grief and inexplicable pain her family and loved ones must feel in this moment. My heart pours out to them — along with each and every person she touched in this world.”
My condolences to all friends, family and loved ones of Joi Harris.
