In an extremely rare public statement, the spokesperson for Mueller’s office, Peter Carr, issued the following statement via email in reference to BuzzFeed’s News report:
“BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the Special Counsel’s Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s Congressional testimony are not accurate.”
BuzzFeed’s report is based on a leak from two anonymous law-enforcement sources that indicated President Trump told Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about the proposed Trump Tower Moscow deal.
Other than BuzzFeed, no other news agency has been able to verify this story, but why would Special Counsel Mueller’s office issue a contradictory statement?
How many stories have circulated in the media about the Mueller investigation? Some have been right, some have been wrong. Some are just pure lies spread by far-right pundits.
But why now, all of a sudden, did Special Counsel Mueller feel the sudden urge to speak out?
BuzzFeed did make clear in their article that Trump’s direction for Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about the Trump Tower Moscow project was known via multiple witnesses, documents, internal emails, and text messages from members of the Trump Organization.
BuzzFeed’s News editor-in-chief Ben Smith defended the publication’s story via a tweet:
“We stand by our reporting and the sources who informed it, and we urge the Special Counsel to make clear what he’s disputing.”
Democrats are now saying to impeach President Trump if this accusation is true. Maybe that had something to do with Mueller’s statement, sort of calm the waters to prevent it from affecting his investigation.
Maybe Mueller is thinking he has a chance at an indictment and if an impeachment goes first, in all seriousness, what are the odds that we would reach the level of a criminal prosecution.
But, if you reverse it, meaning Mueller can or does indict President Trump, than an impeachment is guaranteed and would even be irrelevant at that point.
