Want to talk about civility? Then make sure it goes both ways because once again, more racism from the GOP.
Earlier this week, racist Steve King was sanctioned by the Republicans for his continuous support of white nationalism and white supremacy, and now you can add Jason Smith from Missouri’s 8th congressional district to that list.
Representative Tony Cardenas from
Puerto Rico (California) was at the podium when Smith yelled out “go back to Puerto Rico!”
When Cárdenas asked Republican lawmakers who made the statement, like always when a bully is confronted, crickets.
“We’ve been called names and been told to go back to Mexico, go back to whatever, so many times,” Rep. Sylvia Garcia said. “It’s just unfortunate that it would happen on the floor of the House of Representatives.”
“I was shocked, because I often heard those kinds of comments when I was a kid growing up in Pacoima, California, where I was born and raised,” Cárdenas wrote in an email.
Smith later called Cardenas to apologize because he didn’t have the guts to own up to his racist statement when he did it.
Now the Republicans are saying Smith’s statement was in reference to Democrats visiting Puerto Rico over the weekend, like that makes it any better. It’s disrespectful, immature, and disruptive! But diverting funds from Hurricane Maria to build the border wall, that’s okay.
Maybe Representative Smith wants to know your opinion? Well, you can reach his office at 202-225-4404 and via fax at 202-226-0326. If you wish to send him an email through his website, use zip code 63640.

Post updated thanks to a reader correcting me that Cardenas is from California not Puerto Rico.
