Betsy Devos Wants to Arm Teachers with Federal Funds
The New York Times was the first to break the story that Education Secretary Betsy Devos is actually considering a plan where guns will be allowed in schools and the federal government will provide the funding to purchase the firearms.
Have I mentioned before that the NRA donated $30 million to President Trump’s campaign?
Of course, President Trump who knows nothing about firearms, law enforcement, and thinks John McCain is not a war hero because he was a POW, wants to arm teachers, especially after the Parkland Shootings.
“Armed Educators (and trusted people who work within a school) love our students and will protect them. Very smart people. Must be firearms adept & have annual training. Should get yearly bonus. Shootings will not happen again – a big & very inexpensive deterrent. Up to States.”
The American Federation of Teachers has spoken out against this absurd idea.
“Betsy DeVos wants to turn schools into armed fortresses and make kids and educators less safe. Betsy DeVos wants to turn the U.S. government into an arms dealer for schools. That’s insane.” Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers.
For the record, I know a lot of cops, hang out with a lot of cops, and none of them seem to think that running into a building where everyone is carrying a firearm is a good idea. Gee, I wonder why?
I’ll use another approach: between grammar school, jr. high, and high school, I don’t remember having a bad ass John Rambo like-teacher. They were all old, overweight and probably had bad backs and knees.
What happens when a teacher loses “his” cool and takes out the firearm? Better yet, in a shootout, the teacher puts a bullet in a student’s head? Who is liable?
I’m pretty sure that the last thing students that are victims of school shooting want to see is armed teachers. Really positive environment learning, don’t you think?
Veterans of the military who are trained have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). We are told all the time about fireworks on July 4th and vets, so imagine a high school kid with no training.
After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the US House of Representatives did pass a school safety bill that pledged $50 million in funding for the school districts and it also prohibited the use of that money to buy firearms.
I wonder what if feels like to be bought and paid for by the NRA?

Levi’s will be donating more than $1 million over the next four years to nonprofits and youth activists that work to end gun violence.
Witnesses say as much as twenty shots were fired and law enforcement said multiple firearms were used, including rifles. Ten were shot, including a minor, and three men are in critical condition.
