Citizenship Census Case Will End Up Before Justice Kavanaugh

This post has been updated to include the court pleading.

At issue is the 2020 census where the Trump administration is looking to reinstate a citizenship question. Those in opposition argue that undocumented people won’t reply to the census for fear of being tracked down by I.C.E., and ultimately, the census numbers will be wrong. Of course, wrong in the sense that less people will be counted, then Trump can claim a victory on deporting and eliminating illegal immigration.

But of course, undercounting the amount of people residing in the United States has other consequences as well that affects our daily lives at all levels including budgeting and infrastructure. As a result, there are dozens of lawsuits pending in federal court on this issue and these case(s) will likely end up in the Supreme Court.

This will result in the first case that is heard before Justice Brett Kavanaugh as it relates to policy put forth by the Trump administration.

In part, another issue is the deposition of Wilbur Ross, Commerce Secretary. Trump’s administration has filed a motion in opposition to Ross’ deposition, but Democrats are pushing forward. Democrats obtained documentation that shows Ross sought to have the citizenship question added as a way to enforce voting laws.

The court pleading may be found via this link.
