Julián Castro is the former mayor of San Antonio, Texas. Castro served on President Obama’s cabinet as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, the youngest member of his cabinet (currently 44 years of age), and for a while was considered to be a possible vice-presidential candidate for Hillary Clinton in 2016.
As the HUD Secretary, Castro’s main project was ConnectHome which provided internet accessibility to those who lived in HUD-assisted housing in 28 communities.
In addition, under Castro’s guidance, HUD provided $173 million in grants to create affordable housing and also required cities that received federal funding to examine housing biases under the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule.
Castro also supports Medicare for all and universal pre-k through an increase in sales taxes through a 1/8-cent sales tax increase and comprehensive immigration reform.
