First Letter to White House Counsel from Rep. Cummings About Trump Hush Payments

Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Elijah Cummings, has sent a letter to Pat Cipollone who is the Counsel for the White House.

Rep. Cummings originally made the request in September of 2018, but did not receive any documentation. The reason why is simple enough: Republicans controlled the House at that time.

In the letter that can be seen below, Rep. Cummings is requesting documentation regarding the hush payments made to Stormy Daniels through President Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen.

Is Michael Cohen Playing Games or Someone Got to Him

February 12, 2019

Senator Richard Burr isn’t holding back. Burr, a Republican, is the chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and he’s blasting Michael Cohen for skipping out for the third time on an appearance.

Senator Burr said any “good will” between the committee and Cohen is gone. Why? Because Cohen was out enjoying a nice meal with friends after saying he was recovering from shoulder surgery.

“According to the press we still have Michael Cohen to interview one more time, but I can assure that any good will that might have existed in the committee with Michael Cohen is now gone,” Burr said as talking to reporters.

“He’s already stiffed us on being in Washington today because of an illness,” Burr said. “You have, um — on Twitter, a reporter reported he was having a wild night Saturday night eating out in New York with five buddies. Didn’t seem to have any physical limitations. And he was out with his wife last night.”

Senator Burr is referring to the cover photo for this post that was taken by journalist Christina Binkley.

Ranking Democrat Senator Mark Warner said he shared the frustrations of Burr.

“You would think that someone — we’ve been trying to work with Mr. Cohen — and somebody whose veracity is in somewhat question, you’d think he would want to not do things that further diminish his ability for people to have faith in him,” Warner said.

Cohen originally said he wanted to appear voluntarily, but then cancelled because of public statements from Rudy Giuliani and President Trump that Cohen said amounted to threats and that he feared for his family’s safety.

In return, Cohen was immediately subpoenaed by the House and that hearing was also canceled.

Rep. Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee only said it was in the interests of the investigation to do so.

Cohen is still scheduled to testify in a closed-door session before the House Intelligence Committee on February 28th. In March, Cohen may be in prison, but he could still be subpoenaed to appear.

Originally, I believed Cohen had been cancelling his appearances because Special Counsel Robert Mueller may have told Cohen his testimony would jeopardize the investigation. However, Cohen did retain two new lawyers just to deal with this issue.

In addition, one would think that Special Counsel Mueller would simply reach out to ranking members of the House and Senate and advise them of his investigation and there has been no reporting of that.

So, either Mueller has huge, surprising news coming, or Cohen is hiding something and not telling us the full story.

President Trump Involved with Stormy Daniels’ Hush Payment

November 11, 2018

David Pecker is the former CEO for the National Enquirer and long-time friend of President Trump. Pecker has an immunity deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller and up to now, little attention has focused on Pecker, but that is about to change.

As early as August 2015, Trump got together with Pecker in Trump Tower to discuss helping his campaign, which involves “catch and kill” stories, a term used when the media buys a story, thus, owning the rights, and then does not publish the story. Former Playboy model Karen McDougal is an example of this who sold her story to Pecker and the National Enquirer.

Because of McDougal’s involvement in this, there’s no doubt she will or has already spoken with Mueller’s team.

Pecker has been sitting on thirty years of dirt on Trump, so Cohen discussed with the President buying all the stories Pecker had in his possession. It is known that Pecker kept a safe in his office with compromising material.

In the infamous recording by Michael Cohen with the President, Trump uses the hypothetical that what if Pecker gets hit by truck, meaning what if Pecker dies, what happens to those stories? No doubt the National Enquirer the sister company of AMI (America Media Inc) which owns the material, could release all the stories.

Remember, Trump had said multiple times before to the media and on his Twitter feed that he knew nothing about the payment to Daniels and McDougal. Knowledge of the payments is one of the elements to have committed violations of campaign laws.

Campaign Finance Law Violations

Pecker apparently spoke with an expert on election law regarding the payments and understood there was a certain risk involved of violating campaign finance laws. That is why Pecker had refused reimbursement from Trump on the McDougal story.

In return, Pecker was going to have McDougal write stories for the National Enquirer focusing on fitness, appear on the cover, etc. as a way to better insulate AMI (America Media Inc) from liability. That would not likely hold up in court, but from the outside trying to look in, it does seem that McDougal was hired for legitimate purposes.

It also explains why Pecker did not want to buy Daniels’ story, saying he did not want to be associated with a porn star, forcing Cohen to have to facilitate the payment himself.

Cohen’s Payment to Stormy Daniels

Cohen initially said he made the payment to Stormy Daniels out of his own pocket and he did so because of his relationship to Trump and that he wanted to protect him.

What happened was that Allen Weisselberg, Trump’s CEO and at times personal CPA who also has immunity with Special Counsel Mueller and could have possibly handed over Trump’s tax returns to Mueller, was trying to figure out a way that payment could be made to Daniels. The problem?

Daniels was shopping her story around and so short on time, Cohen took out the line of credit on his home which that in of itself could be a violation if done so fraudulently and he lied on the loan documents.

Don’t forget that the same day that Paul Manafort was convicted, Cohen accepted a plea deal and he stated in open court that his campaign finance law violations were done at the direction of President Trump.
