Anti-Gun Protests in Miami, Florida
Not too far from where I was born and raised is the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition Center. For more than thirty years, a gun show has been organized by Florida Gun Shows on the fairgrounds. I’ve even visited myself numerous times.
Now, in a push by Miami Democrats, they are hoping to have future gun shows that is located on county property canceled.
Javier Fernandez from House District 114, is running for re-election in the House of Representatives, organized the rally.
“There’s nothing we can do legally to compel them to change their policy [or] their behavior. That’s why we’re out here trying to mobilize some focus on this issue, get them to voluntarily do what we think is right.”
– Javier Fernandez
“I find it extremely ironic that the county fair, where we bring children to the fair, is right now hosting a gun show. If the Republicans in Congress like Curbelo are not willing to take a stance, to have the political will and courage to do the right thing to keep our community safe, then we need to change Congress, and that’s why I’m here today.”
-Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is a Democrat running against incumbent Carlos Curbelo in Florida’s 26th Congressional District.
“The idea of putting together youth and sponsoring a gun show is unacceptable and frankly, this is a public place and public entities ought not to subsidizing gun shows.”
-Donna Shalala, former President of the University of Miami who is also running for Congress.
Khalid Akkawi is the owner of Florida Gun Shows and stated he would pursue legal action if his lease was not renewed.
- State Senator Annette Taddeo who is running for re-election in Senate District 40
- State Senator Elect Jason Pizzo
- Candidate for the State Senate Jeffrey Solomon
- South Miami Mayor Philip Stoddard.
