Happy Hour News and Headlines- Fact Check, Migrant Caravan, President Obama
It’s Friday so that means one thing: happy hour news and headlines. So, grab your favorite beverage and let’s review summaries of today’s headline news.
Fact Check Time
As President Trump continues with his migrant caravan rhetoric, it’s hard to keep up with the lies, but let’s try.
The Migrant Caravan is Full of Hardened Criminals
No, the Republican party is, but we will leave that for another day. Fact is they are poor people escaping gang violence.
25-30 Million Illegal Immigrants in the Country
Surprisingly, not true. Try half that number.
“At this very moment, large well-organized caravans of migrants are marching towards our southern border. Some people call it an invasion. …These are tough people in many cases; a lot of young men, strong men and a lot of men that maybe we don’t want in our country. …This isn’t an innocent group of people. It’s a large number of people that are tough. They have injured, they have attacked.”
Once again, zero evidence. Of course, common sense dictates that there could be criminals since we are talking several thousand people, but there’s no proof that it’s that many of them, etc.
“President Obama separated the children from parents and nobody complained. When we continued the exact same law, the country went crazy.”
Guess what- not true! President Obama did not separate families.
Limiting Asylum Seekers
President Trump said he will take steps to limit asylum seekers with an Executive Order.
“My administration is finalizing a plan to end the rampant abuse of our asylum system,” Trump said in a speech about immigration. “Under this plan, the illegal aliens will no longer get a free pass into our country by lodging meritless claims in seeking asylum. Instead, migrants seeking asylum will have to present themselves lawfully at a port of entry.”
“Those who choose to break our laws and enter illegally will no longer be able to use meritless claims to gain automatic admission into our country. We will hold them for a long time if necessary.”
Of course, the law is pretty clear on what happens when a migrant presents themselves at the border and requests asylum and an Executive Order sounds nice, but is likely to have zero effect since this matter no doubt will be litigated.
In addition, under U.S. law, any foreign national is allowed to apply for asylum upon entering the United States and it doesn’t have to be at a “designated port of arrival.”
President Obama Hits the Road
President Obama will be in Florida to show his support for Andrew Gillum with the midterm elections four days away.
Drink up and have a happy and safe weekend.
