Maria Butina Says She’s Not a Spy, But Got Convicted For…

Finally, we get to hear from Maria Butina directly. In her first interview, she denies being a spy. What did Butina get convicted for? Being a spy.

But, there’s a caveat: if she were a spy, she would be better at it and thus, that’s why she’s not a spy because she got caught. Imagine trying to use that defense in just about any facet of your life.

Per Butina, “truth is my best defender here. If I would be the Russian spy, you would never see me in public. I mean, I would be the most unseen person on Earth.”

Butina even comments on prior statements from prosecutors that accused her of flirting and having sex with men to get closer to them.

“Me being called a whore … it’s very hard,” she said. “It’s just so much pain for the family. I care about my reputation.”

“I didn’t know it became a crime to have good relations with Russia — now it’s a crime. They hate me in Russia, because they think I’m an American spy. And here they think I’m a Russian spy.”

Butina’s interview with Jim Bamford for The New Republic can be read via this link.

Get a Cell Ready for Maria Butina’s Boyfriend

Paul Erickson is the boyfriend of convicted Russian spy Maria Butina.

The Republican with strong ties to the NRA (National Rifle Association) has now been indicted by a federal grand jury in South Dakota on charges of wire fraud and money laundering.

The indictment is separate from the charges that Butina pled guilty to. Erickson is accused of defrauding investors through a company called Investing with Dignity that dealt with specialized wheelchairs and a chain of assisted living homes called Compass Care.

Erickson is also charged with fraud in a real estate development in North Dakota.
