New Florida Domestic Violence Law

Governor Ron DeSantis has signed into law effective July 1, a new law that protects victims of domestic violence.

Known as HB563, it provides victims of domestic violence unemployment benefits, protecting victims who at times face the issue of quitting their job to avoid an abusive spouse. Before, if someone quit their job, they were not entitled to benefits.

A court injunction is required and efforts must continue to find employment, for example, if the employer has multiple locations, the victim could/should relocate.

While it is not enough, at least it is a step in the right direction when it comes to protecting women from domestic violence.

Unfortunately, I have seen how finances can be a contributing factor in a divorce or not getting divorced as the case may be, and the same applies to domestic violence cases.

For information on domestic violence shelters, see below:

FCADV operates and manages Florida’s 24 hour statewide hotline. The Florida Domestic Violence (FL DV) Hotline is a trilingual service provided 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Services include support and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and their friends and family. FL DV hotline advocates connect survivors to their local certified center for shelter, support groups, outreach and ongoing advocacy.

Callers are asked to choose their preferred language in order to be connected with an advocate:

Prompt 1. Spanish

Prompt 2. English

Prompt 4. Creole

The Legal Hotline is a non-emergency line for survivors in need of legal advice and referral.
