Trump Yet Again, Uses the Military as a Prop, Then Lies to Them
Finally, President Trump visited military troops, but it’s not all good. Is it good that he went now after more than two years in office? Of course. Better late than never, but there are so many wrongs with this picture that any good was erased immediately.
For one, the President lied to troops and it’s the type of lie that they would know about.
At the al-Asad air base located in Iraq, he told the troops the following:
“Is anybody here willing to give up the big pay raise you just got? You haven’t gotten one in more than 10 years. More than 10 years. And we got you a big one. I got you a big one. I got you a big one.”
In Trump’s fact free zone, he fails to recognize that members of the military have received a raise every year for the last ten that ranges anywhere between 1 to 3.9 percent, even during the pay freeze of the Great Recession.
Congress has already signed an increase of 2.6 percent for 2019 which is the largest since 2010, but ten percent? Not even if you add 2018 at 2.4 percent with next year’s 2.6 percent do you reach ten percent, just half of it, so who knows where Trump gets those numbers from.
“We had plenty of people that came up. They said, ‘You know, we can make it smaller. We can make it 3 percent. We can make it 2 percent. We can make it 4 percent.’ I said, ‘No. Make it 10 percent. Make it more than 10 percent.’”
Per Politifact, the last time the military did not receive a bump in pay was 1983! Regardless, it gets worse for what may have been the worst week in Trump’s presidency.
We all know about Trump dodging the war because of “bone spurs.” I had posted a question on Twitter asking how it does not affect Trump’s golf game. One Trump cult follower responded to me by saying Trump is not walking the course which only leads me to the logical conclusion that, that person knows nothing about golf.
The “bone spurs” story isn’t going away regardless of the fact that in an interview Trump couldn’t remember which foot had the “bone spurs,” but now new reporting has potentially discovered the doctor who got the “bone spurs” deferment for Trump and apparently, that doctor was a tenant in a building own by his father Fred Trump, so you can do the second grade math.
Besides draft dodging, there is Trump’s past statement that “John McCain is not a war hero” because he was caught. What does that say about every member of the military that was KIA, MIA, or POW’s? Let’s not forget how Trump wasn’t invited to McCain’s funeral and the fiasco of flying the flags at half-staff.
Then Trump in an exercise in futility, sent the military to the border to protect the country from the spooky and scary “migrant caravan” that no one is talking about anymore. Where did the caravan go?
Now comes the issue with Syria and the withdraw of troops, causing General Mattis to resign and don’t forget Trump has said before he knows more than the generals. Mattis’ resignation is a YUGE problem for Trump because Mattis carries with him enormous respect.
If you are to believe Trump at his word, which I cannot believe why you would, we are fighting ISIS alone. Try between sixty to seventy countries are involved, and if President Trump says we are shouldering most of the weight, that’s like saying superstars the likes of Lebron James carry their team(s). They do, that’s the price of being a superstar and our military are superstars.
So, Trump’s visiting of the troops is nothing more than a PR stunt, trying to distract from what may have been the last straw for the military with General Mattis. But, here’s the thing: there are no more campaign rallies to attend which served as a shot of adrenaline to the President hearing tens of thousands of people chanting in his favor. He misses that adrenaline high, and like any junkie, you replace one addiction with another. The military is that new high.
The military like always shows respect, honor, and dignity, even if they disagree with the President. They will chant his name in campaign rally-like fashion, take endless selfies with President Trump and he loves that.
At rallies, Trump was in control of the narrative and visiting the troops will be same. Don’t be surprised if Trump starts to visit troops regularly, maybe more so than any President and if so, once again, the military is being used as a prop after he has insulted the military time and time again.
