Former attorney for President Trump, Michael Cohen, was scheduled to testify before Congress publicly on February 7th.
We were all ready for prime-time political television, that is until President Trump continued to accuse Cohen’s in-laws of imaginary crimes, and of course, backed up by Trump’s lawyer turned carnival barker, turned political hack, turned clown- Rudy Giuliani.
Now, per Cohen’s attorney, Lanny Davis, Cohen will not testify because he fears for the safety of his family.
Davis released the following statement:
“Due to ongoing threats against his family from President Trump and Mr. Giuliani, as recently as this weekend, as well as Mr. Cohen’s continued cooperation with ongoing investigations, by advice of counsel, Mr. Cohen’s appearance will be postponed to a later date. Mr. Cohen wishes to thank Chairman Cummings for allowing him to appear before the House Oversight Committee and looks forward to testifying at the appropriate time.”
Davis added, “This is a time where Mr. Cohen had to put his family and their safety first.”
Democrats do have the option of issuing a subpoena to force Cohen to appear and testify and House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings has already said that is a possibility, even if Cohen is in prison.
The fact that Cohen would receive threats is expected in today’s world and now President Trump got exactly what he wanted. Common sense dictates why Trump doesn’t want Cohen to testify.
However, the Democrats recently sent President Trump a warning on witness tampering.
Now, here’s my question to you. You don’t think Cohen knew this was coming regardless if the threats were against his father-in-law or from President Trump directly? This was predictable. Just ask Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. But, here’s where it gets interesting.
I did ask in the post below what if Cohen was setting everyone up? Now, I don’t mean in a negative way, but in a smart way as he has proven already.
Cohen had the foresight to secretly record President Trump. Why? Because he knew Trump better than anyone else and no doubt Cohen knew he would get thrown under the political bus sooner or later, so Cohen took out his insurance policy.
It would only make sense if Cohen had secret recordings to let Trump know because the whole point of an insurance policy is to cash it in at some point. That’s when things went south.
I have no doubt that Cohen was threatened and I’m sure he has the emails and voice mails to back that up from crazy MAGA cult followers, but by withdrawing his scheduled appearance, giving Trump a victory, albeit a temporary one, maybe Cohen just wanted to add witness tampering to the list of charges that await Trump for obstruction of justice.
It makes perfect sense to me and I can’t say I wouldn’t blame him. And even more so, he’s done nothing illegal.
Cohen’s appearance before Congress was voluntarily and he surely knew along with Davis that a subpoena was step two. But now, Cohen gets to add one more criminal charge, putting Trump at three potential charges.
