Have no doubt that Special Counsel Robert Mueller leaves no (roger) stone un-turned and Mueller does know everything. Next on his list- President Trump’s mouthpiece White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
Sanders said publicly for the first time she met with Mueller’s team in an interview with CNN on Friday.
“The President urged me, like he has everyone in the administration, to fully cooperate with the special counsel. I was happy to voluntarily sit down with them,” Sanders said.
I think it is safe to say that’s a lie. No one is happy to sit down with Mueller’s prosecutors which has been compared to a legal proctology exam by Michael Caputo.
It is likely that Mueller is investigating statements that Sanders would have made publicly and how she obtained that information. Sanders has been contradicted not only by news reports but also by the White House.
At issue is how Sanders received her information. For example, were public statements provided to her from President Trump and if so, how did Trump obtain it?
One person that I believe is not in the clear would be former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker who obviously still has a role in the Justice Department because of the fact that he is a hard-core supporter of President Trump.
Whitaker has been in the Justice Department more as a spy for President Trump than anything else.
Matthew Whitaker is Staying
With the confirmation of William Barr as Attorney General, the next question is what happens with Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker?
The answer is he gets to stay.
After his contentious hearing before the House Judiciary Committee chaired by Jerry Nadler, Whitaker has been advised that he will be returning to testify because as Nadler put it, his testimony was “unsatisfactory.”
I was hoping Whitaker was brought back under subpoena as a private citizen, yet, he will stay at the Justice Department as a senior counselor in the office of the Associate Attorney General.
In addition, his position may be on a short-term basis. My question is why?
Why hasn’t Whitaker been given a position that is not permanent. He was the interim Attorney General and now he’s offered another short-term position. By keeping Whitaker around, he is still backed by the Justice Department, which maybe that is the plan.
I’ve already been critical of Barr’s son-in-law Tyler McGaughey leaving his position in the Justice Department to now work as a White House lawyer, meaning in order to avoid possible conflicts of interest, he created another one.
And Barr’s daughter Mary Daly is leaving the Deputy Attorney General’s Office to work in the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Since the Russia probe also focuses on finances, that is also another conflict of interest.
