Here is a list of just some of the businesses that filed for bankruptcy in 2019 which was the worst ever for the retail industry.
Shopko filed for bankruptcy in January and will be shutting down at least 70% of its locations.
Gymboree had already filed for bankruptcy, before. Now, it plans to close all 800 locations.
Things Remembered has 450 locations and will try to keep open half of them after filing for bankruptcy in February.
Payless Shoesource filed for bankruptcy for the second time in February. All of its locations, more than 2,000, will be permanently closed.
Charlotte Russe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February and some locations out of the 500 plus will remain open thanks to an investor buyout.
Diesel filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March and will be closing some of its 28 stores.
Z Gallerie is a home furniture retailer and will close 17 out of 76 stores after filing for bankruptcy.
Roberto Cavalli is a luxury fashion brand that filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in April. It closed all stores and locations.
Charming Charlie already filed for bankruptcy once. It will be closing all 261 locations.
A’Gaci is a woman’s fashion brand that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August. All 54 locations will be closed.
Avenue is a plus-size apparel brand that originally filed for Chapter 11, then converted to a Chapter 7 bankruptcy
Barneys New York
Barneys New York is a high-end department store known for its location in New York. Barneys filed for Chapter 11 in August.
Fred’s is a discount retailer and pharmacy and plans to shut down more than 500 stores.
Forever 21 has locations worldwide and will close dozens of locations in the United States.
Sugarfinaions is a luxury candy store. Some locations will remain open such as inside certain Nordstrom locations.
Destination Maternity is several brands that includes A Pea in the Pod and Motherhood Maternity. How many locations will close is unknown at this time due to an investor buyout.
