Another Diocese has now filed for bankruptcy due to a child sexual abuse scandal.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester has filed for bankruptcy protection, Chapter 11.
The petition estimates the diocese’s assets as $50 million to $100 million — and its financial liabilities as $100 million to $500 million.
Per an article by USA, that is eight dioceses in New York and twenty nationwide that have filed for bankruptcy due to child sexual abuse lawsuits.
The bankruptcy filing is the direct result of the Child Victims Act which extends the time frame to file the claims regardless of when the abuse occurred.
The Rochester diocese listed 59 lawsuits in their bankruptcy petition.
