Last week I wrote how Trump tweeted that he would make an announcement the next day about the government shutdown.
No one seemed to make the connection that the Supreme Court did not hear the DACA appeals from the Trump administration, pushing it till the next term which is in October, so within an hour of the Supreme Court gone for the weekend, Trump tweets his announcement which ultimately was a three year extension for DACA recipients. Trump had no choice but to make that offer.
Trump’s announcement only came because he lost at the Supreme Court level. Now with the government in chaos after a thirty-five day shutdown, Trump agrees to a temporary funding solution with ZERO dollars allocated for the wall.
President Trump’s biggest priority and top campaign promise was to “build that wall.” So, he accepts an offer of nothing?
What was the purpose of 800,000 federal employees and 2 million contractors not earning a paycheck for more than a month?
Why would Trump now accept the same offer made from the beginning by Democrats? Because he needed to shift the focus.
Within hours of Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone getting arrested, the shutdown ends. It’s not the first time these coincidences take place.
The agreement to fund the government is temporary, so Congress has three weeks to figure out how to handle the U.S. – Mexico border.
Meanwhile, #trumpcave is trending since the President had tweeted “we will not Cave!” Trump caved and will continue to do so. Remember, he said he would “own” the shutdown. He does and the right feels like they got stabbed in the heart.
Trump has given himself an out, he always does, and he’s back to talking about making the border wall a “national emergency.” It’s nonsense because that will get tied up in the courts immediately and I’m sure Republicans don’t want to go down that road for fear of opening of the floodgates.
What happens if a Democrat takes over in 2020 and starts declaring other issues a national emergency?
Gun control? National emergency!
DACA? National emergency!
“We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier,” Trump said. “If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shut down on Feb. 15 – again – or I would use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution of the United States to address this emergency.”
If Trump could “use the powers afforded” to him, he would have done so already. It’s a loser argument but it doesn’t mean he won’t try it just to make it appear to his base that he is “fighting.”
Ann Coulter who seems to be the new Trump adviser, tweeted that Trump is “the biggest wimp ever to serve as President of the United States.”
Trump seems to have tweeted in response that this is “in no way a concession” and that he was simply “taking care of millions of people who were getting badly hurt by the Shutdown.”
“The walls we are building are not medieval walls. They are smart walls designed to meet the needs of front-line border agents and are operationally effective. These barriers are made of steel, have see-through visibility, which is very important, and are equipped with sensors, monitors and cutting-edge technology, including state-of-the-art drones.”
Trump did say before that he knew more about drones than anyone else.
“We do not need 2,000 miles (3,200 km) of concrete wall from sea to shining sea. We never did. We never proposed that. We never wanted that because we have barriers at the border where natural structures are as good as anything that we could build.”
You know what, Trump caved. Bigly!
The temporary reopening of the government is until February 15th.
