Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya who was present at the Trump Tower meeting along with Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort, Donald Trump, Jr., and Michael Flynn, has been charged with obstruction of justice in a money laundering case.
While Veselnitskaya’s indictment is not related directly to the Trump Tower meeting, it only brings Russia closer to Trump’s campaign.
The company involved is Prevezon Holdings, which was accused by prosecutors of using $230 million to purchase $5.6 million in real estate, a typical money laundering scheme where you overpay.
Prevezon is owned by Russian businessman Denis Katsyv who then launched a multi-million-dollar legal and lobbying campaign to fight the court action and oppose the Magnitsky Act. Veselnitskaya was the lawyer.
Bill Browder had retained the services of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian tax lawyer who uncovered the scheme by the Russian government to seize Browder’s assets in a $230 million tax scheme. The Magnitsky Act was named after him because of Browder’s work with the U.S. government in seeking sanctions against those involved and human rights violations.
It is for that reason that President Vladimir Putin has been trying to get Browder arrested for years, even held a trial in absentia where he was found guilty. Browder was even arrested recently on a warrant in Spain through INTERPOL that was quickly quashed.
Magnitsky died in a Russian prison from health-related illness.
Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York had asked the Russian government to assist with the investigation, but Russia refused, responding with a letter that prosecutors accuse Veselnitskaya of drafting herself and filing a false declaration in court.
Russia had their own “investigation” and concluded that “all Russian government personnel” were innocent, but of course, Browder and his companies are the ones that committed the fraud.
At a minimum, this connects to the infamous Trump Tower meeting where Don, Jr. was contacted by publicist Rob Goldstone and told they had “dirt” on Hillary Clinton. That’s when Don, Jr. replied “I love it.”
President Trump had even said days earlier at a campaign rally that he was going to release “dirt” on Hillary, which shows that President Trump knew about the meeting which Don, Jr. has always claimed the President didn’t. It’s likely that will result in perjury charges for Don, Jr. because of his testimony before the House Intelligence Committee.
The indictment can be seen here.
